Event Overview

Join Common Sense Society’s vice president of education Dr. Murray Bessette on September 6 at 4:00 P.M. E.T. for a virtual information session titled, “Understanding September 11, 2001.” In this session, Dr. Bessette will discuss the ideas presented in our lesson plan, “Understanding September 11, 2001,” and guide teachers through discussing this subject with their students.

Today’s students, whether undergraduates or younger, did not live through the events of September 11, 2001, or its immediate aftermath, and that makes fully understanding the lasting historic and cultural significance of 9/11 challenging. As teachers, we have the opportunity to educate the next generation about the significance of September 11, 2001 and lead them in an important national conversation.

Participants will discuss these ideas with Dr. Bessette, vice president of education at Common Sense Society and former associate professor of political science at Morehead State University. Participants will leave with access to a one-day lesson plan for grades 6-12 students titled, “Understanding September 11, 2001” that combines multiple resources such as critical essays and videos to educate future generations on the attacks of September 11, 2001, and place the event in its historical context.
