Event Overview
Common Sense Society Artist-In-Residence Michael Curtis has expressed his admiration for the varied architecture in Old Town Alexandria because the history of the world is on view during a simple walk down Prince Street. Noting different styles of residential architecture, from the French Revival and early Federalist to the Neoclassical homes dotting each side of this famous street, Michael will describe how we built our homes and how that changed over time. The journey will take us through Western history by describing the evolution of architecture. Join us as we walk with Michael Curtis to hear him tell the story of beauty in Western civilization through the appreciation of the beauty of thoughtfully built homes. This unique Practicum will also be open to CSS Alumni.
The event will begin at our office on Prince street on Friday 5 May at 1:00 P.M. Weather permitting, we will walk down Prince street together and return for light refreshments. The entire walk will be approximately one mile and will conclude at 5:00 P.M.

Featured Speaker
Mr. Michael Curtis is the artist-in-residence at Common Sense Society. He is a sculptor, painter, historian, architectural designer and poet. He has taught and lectured at universities, colleges, and museums, including the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art, the College for Creative Studies, and the National Gallery of Art. His pictures and statues are housed in over three hundred private and public collections, including the Library of Congress, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Supreme Court. His plays, essays, verse and translations have been published in over thirty journals. His most recent nonfiction books include, Occasional Poetry: How to Write Poems for Any Occasion, and The Classical Architecture and Monuments of Washington, D.C.: A History and Guide.
